Thoughts about "Music and Lyrics"

Drew Barrymore is a talented actress who's simply outstanding in this romantic comedy where music is woven seamlessly throughout the movie. It is a happy movie which made me smile and leave the theatre with a feel-good vibe.

Indeed, in Music and Lyrics, there is chemistry between Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant. The movie has many catchy songs, especially the uncut piano version of the simple yet beautiful tune titled "Way Back Into Love".

I've been living with a shadow overhead
I've been sleeping with a cloud above my bed
I've been lonely for so long
Trapped in the past, I just can't seem to move on

I've been hiding all my hopes and dreams away

Just in case I ever need em again someday
I've been setting aside time
To clear a little space in the corners of my mind

All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love Oh oh oh

I've been watching but the stars refuse to shine
I've been searching but I just don't see the signs I know that it's out there
There's got to be something for my soul somewhere

I've been looking for someone to shed some light
Not just somebody just to get me throught the night
I could use some direction
And I'm open to your suggestions

All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love
And if I open my heart again
I guess I'm hoping you'll be there for me in the end

There are moments when I don't know if it's real
Or if anybody feels the way I feel
I need inspiration
Not just another negotiation

All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can't make it through without a way back into love
And if I open my heart to you I'm hoping you'll show me what to do
And if you help me to start again
You know that I'll be there for you in the end

In the movie, Hugh Grant departs from his debonair roles and plays Alex Fletcher, a washed-up '80s pop star, who’s been reduced to working the nostalgia circuit at county fairs and amusement parks.

He gets a chance to revive his career when reigning pop diva Cora invites him to write and record a duet with her, but he has to write the perfect song, complete with lyrics, within the next few days! The problem is that Alex hasn’t written a song in years!

Enter Sophie Fisher (DREW BARRYMORE), Alex’s eccentric, low self-esteem, plant lady who's also been through a tough time in her life, thanks to an ex boyfriend who depicts her life in a despicable book. Sophie is somehow caught up in his life and as a lyricist for the first time in her life. Both face barriers in overcoming their fears and quest for success, and also, in living up to the standards of their music. Both are sustenance and motivation for each other in living up to their fears.

Somehow along the way and writing the song, Alex and Sophie fall for each other but there's a test of principles and barriers that come their way. But like all soppy love stories, yes, I did shed some tears...there's a happy ending, but you'd really have to see it for yourself.

I do so hope to see it again with the special someone in my life now, ES...and revel in the beauty of love triumphant in overcoming fears and sad memories... "I've found my way back into love", for now and for always.
